Sandy beaches Karpathos: this is where you want to go!

We have now also visited various other islands in Greece, but for us Karpathos still has the most diversity of beaches and a large number of beautiful beaches. From high waves to a mirror of water: there is something for everyone! And in addition to pebble beaches, there are also plenty of sandy beaches. But what are the sandy beaches on Karpathos? We take you in the 9 (more famous) sandy beaches of the island!

Diakoftis strand

Diakoftis beach is one of the most famous sandy beaches on Karpathos. And also busy, which is special given the unpaved road to it. Still, the road is fine. It is unpaved, but fairly flat. There is also a good chance that you will encounter sheep and goats! And it's actually not one, but two beaches. Both beaches are sandy and you can walk far into the sea, especially at the beach on the right. The water here is crystal clear. Because of the rocks on the sides of the beaches, this is also a nice place for snorkeling!

Those who want to spot planes are also in the right place here: the airport is literally next to this beach, so the planes really land next to you.

In the summer there are sun beds here, but those who come at the beginning of May can still be lucky (like us, see the photo below!) If you want a beach bed, you unfortunately have to put something here: € 50 for a set in the 1st row..

Pigadia strand

As far as we are concerned, not necessarily a beautiful or very special beach, but nice and close to the city! The beach is incredibly long and is a mix of occasional small pebbles and stretches of sand only. You can easily walk here from the city and in high season a special path is created so that the beach is also wheelchair friendly!

On the beach you will find various beach bars and you can often rent beach beds for their tent. The other pieces are nice and empty for when you just want to put down your towel!

Update July 2023: Since last week you can now rent a jet ski, kayak and pedal boat on the beach of Pigadia. You will find the rental point in front of the Alimounda Mare hotel.

Below is a photo from a distance from Pigadia (Karpathos town) . The beach runs from the large ship to the far left!

Amoopi strand

The seaside town of Amoopi has several beaches, but Amoopi & Little Amoopi are the 2 sandy beaches here! In the picture below we are looking at the large beach of Amoopi, on our right you will find Little Amoopi. Both beaches are great for small children, you can walk into the sea here! It is also possible to sup on Amoopi, unfortunately the company is only closed for the rest of this year (2023) due to circumstances.

Little Amoopi is, in our opinion, one of the finest sandy beaches, but in high season it is very hot here (no wind often) and busy. As far as we are concerned, these beaches are perfect at the beginning of May!

You can rent beach beds, but they are very expensive around Amoopi. You pay €30,- and reservation costs €10,-

Agios Nikolaos (Arkassa) strand

Agios Nikolaos is also called Arkassa beach . This sandy beach is nice and large and is located near the center of Arkassa. There are two beach bars that also rent out beds: Karpassion & Glaros. Karpassion also regularly hosts parties with a DJ on Sunday afternoons.

In terms of sea, you never know what to expect on Arkassa. The water can be very flat, but especially in high season the chance of high waves is also very high! As a child I (Athina) always came here with great pleasure. Take a bodyboard into the water to catch waves.

This beach is also ideal for the sunset and if you want to do a sunset photo shoot: this is the place to be! We also had a number of wedding photos taken here.

Finiki strand

Finiki beach is located directly in the village itself. It is therefore a super cozy and cute center with delicious Greek tavernas, a few apartment complexes, the beach and the small harbor. The beach is not very big, but also perfect for children because of its size and you can also walk far into the water here.

You can enjoy a delicious meal across the street at Marina's or Mama Cuisine and are you in the mood for a cocktail? Then go to the Malibu beach bar.

Lefkos strand

A bit of a drive for most people (45 minutes from Pigadia), but well worth a visit! Lefkos has several beaches, including a sandy beach. The beach has umbrellas, although there is also enough space if you don't need them and in the early and late season you even have a chance that there are no beds at all! There are a number of minimarkets and several tavernas to eat.

TIP: combine Lefkos with a visit to the village of Mesochori!

You can put the maps on your own Google Maps and access them via smartphone, tablet and PC! You can buy it separately , but the maps are also included in our travel guide.

Christou Pigadi strand

You will find this lovely beach in Afiartis. The beach consists of small, fine pebbles and part sand. You will find beach beds and there is a taverna. In the water it quickly becomes deep and there are rocks / stones. It is therefore also nice to snorkel here! And occasionally a windsurfer surfs in the distance. They surf in the bay next to it!

With the scooter? It is best to drive to the beach via the 'normal' asphalted road. You will then come out on the left side of the beach and if you want you can walk across the beach to the right side. It is easy to do by car via the left side + you have enough parking space, it is a bit more spacious here.

Damatria strand

Damatria is located next to Christou Pigadia beach and is really our favorite beach if we want to take a quick dip after a working day. Officially, we wouldn't really recommend Damatria as a sandy beach, but it is part of the list. The beach of Damatria is mainly full of large pebbles. There are a few small pieces of sand, but with one of the beach beds you can enjoy the whole day here. The sea here is not full of pebbles, but of sand. So you can stand in the water here & walk far into the sea.

For a nice lunch you can go to Poseidon Blue , or you can order something from them on the beach via a QR code at one of the beds! By the way, the beds here are still nice and cheap (Karpathos standards) namely € 15, -.
