Earthquakes on Karpathos: what travelers need to know

You’re sitting on the beach with a book, and suddenly you feel a small tremble. Was that an earthquake? Probably and honestly, that’s nothing unusual here on Karpathos. But I totally get it if it catches you off guard, especially if you’ve never experienced one before.

Let’s take away those worries: you’re safe here. 🌍

In this blog, I’ll explain why earthquakes happen on Karpathos, how safe it really is, and what you can do if you ever feel one.

Spoiler alert: it’s usually no big deal. 🌍

Why do earthquakes happen on Karpathos?

Karpathos is located in one of the more seismically active zones of the eastern Mediterranean. Beneath the island, two major tectonic plates meet: the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. The African Plate slowly moves under the Eurasian Plate, building up tension in the earth’s crust. When that tension is released, you get an earthquake.

Most of the time, these quakes happen under the sea, between Karpathos, Crete, and Rhodes, so they’re mild and rarely cause any damage.

How often do earthquakes happen here?

Small earthquakes occur fairly often in this region. Most of them are so light you barely notice them maybe just a short vibration while you’re sitting still. Locals are used to it, and the island is well prepared.

Recently, there have been a few stronger quakes offshore, but nothing that affected Karpathos itself.

Are buildings on Karpathos earthquake-safe?

Yes, absolutely. Since 1985, Greece has enforced strict building codes that require new constructions to meet earthquake resistance standards.

hat means:

  • Solid concrete structures
  • Reinforced foundations and walls
  • Mostly low-rise buildings (which are safer in quakes)

Most hotels and newer homes on Karpathos follow these standards – so you can relax knowing you’re in a safe and stable structure.

Should I worry about earthquakes on Karpathos?

Not at all – and I say that from experience. Here’s why:

  • ✅ Most earthquakes are mild and over in seconds.
  • ✅ Serious damage on Karpathos is extremely rare.
  • ✅ Buildings are built to withstand movement.
  • ✅ It’s normal to feel surprised – or even a little weird after.

As long as you know what to do in case of a tremor (see tips below), there’s really no reason to be worried.

Some people (myself included) feel a bit dizzy or slightly nauseous after a quake – especially if you’re sensitive to motion, get carsick or seasick easily, or have a sensitive inner ear. It’s nothing to worry about and usually passes quickly. You’re not imagining it!

What to do if you feel an earthquake

If you do experience a tremor, don’t panic. It’s almost always minor and short. But here’s what to do just in case:

If you’re indoors:

  • Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture like a table or desk.
  • Or stand in a doorframe of a supporting wall (not just any doorway).
  • Stay away from windows, mirrors, and tall shelves.
  • Don’t use elevators immediately after.
  • Don’t go running outside!

If you’re outdoors:

  • Stay away from buildings, walls, eletricity or anything that could fall.

  • Head to an open space if it’s safe to do so.

Bonus tip: Curious about recent activity? The EMSC app gives live updates of seismic activity in the area.

Why earthquakes aren’t a reason to avoid Karpathos

Earthquakes are a normal part of the natural rhythm in this region – kind of like wind on the sea or a summer thunderstorm. It’s part of what shaped this incredible landscape.

The dramatic cliffs, rugged mountains, and rocky coastlines of Karpathos are the result of thousands of years of tectonic movement. It’s part of the magic – not a reason to worry.

In short: small shakes, no stress

✔️ Earthquakes on Karpathos are common and usually harmless.
✔️ Most buildings are earthquake-resistant and safe.
✔️ Know the basics, and enjoy your holiday without worry.
✔️ Karpathos remains one of the most peaceful, beautiful places to relax.
