Athens is a great city. Last year Vincent and I spent a few hours in this metropolis during a layover and we really enjoyed ourselves. First thing on the agenda while we were there: a visit to the Acropolis in Athens. You can read all about this wonder of the world in this blog.
What is the Acropolis?
The Acropolis is found in Athens and the word says it all. It comes from the word Akros which means the highest part of and from the word Polis which means city, so it literally means the highest part of the city. So the Acropolis is not the building itself, but actually the plain so to speak. On the Acropolis you will find more than 20 buildings, the most important of which are:
- Parthenon
- Propylon
- Temple of Nikè
- Erechtheion
Visit the Acropolis in Athens
Vincent and I went to the Acropolis incredibly unplanned. Coincidentally, we arrived at a little before 8 and it turned out to open at 8. In retrospect, it was really nice that it worked out that way because it was wonderfully quiet on the Acropolis for the first hour. The moment we had visited everything and walked back down, all the guides arrived in large groups. So that brings me right to my first tip: visit the Acropolis in the early morning or at the end of the day (they are open until 8 p.m.). Not only because of the crowds, but also because of the heat. The best time to visit the wonder of the world is in the spring, but if you’re there in the summer it’s just bloody hot after 10 o’clock. We were there in May and in it was already 30 degrees when we visited the Acropolis! By the way, you cannot buy a ticket online, only at the entrance of the Acropolis. A ticket costs 20 euros.
Have you been to the Acropolis?
