Kalimera!!! I’m sitting on the beach with 25 degrees, but in advance I have prepared this blog ‘Travel Tips Greece’ for you! Are you planning to go to Greece soon? Then don’t skip these travel tips for Greece! I give you 6 tips that you should not forget.
-
Cash
Greece is the land of cash. Whereas nowadays we all prefer to pay for everything by debit card (yes, even that 0.50-cent sandwich!), in Greece they pay almost everything in cash. In recent years you can pay more and more with your PIN card and slowly we residents can also pay electricity and water digitally. Still, it is handy to always have some cash with you. Remote eateries or stores sometimes only accept cash.

Car driving
Greeks are a bunch of madmen on the road. While calling, shouting and with one hand on the roof, they tear across the roads. So be prepared when you get into a cab 😉 I myself have gotten used to the cab. On Karpathos there are no intersections and you notice that the driver is just really used to the roads, but the first time was a bit of a sweat!

Holidays
Where we in the Netherlands are getting more and more flexible with holidays and stores, in Greece it is only normal that stores are closed on holidays. So you cannot do your shopping for the evening on Easter Sunday like we do. So be sure to check if there are Greek holidays when you are there and do your shopping the day before.

Taxicabs
A word about those cabs. You probably prefer to drive yourself anyway after my story above about Greeks and traffic, but it also saves a lot for your wallet. Whereas in Italy, Portugal and Spain cabs are incredibly cheap, this is not the case in Greece. With a car you are ultimately cheaper and you are much freer of course!

Drinking water
In Greece it is better not to drink water from the tap. We (especially in South Holland) are used to good water and therefore an extra reason not to drink the water from the tap. In the supermarket you can get spotlessly cheap bottles of water and in a restaurant you can order a 1.5 liter bottle for €1.50 as well. On some islands you can also find water sources along the road where you can fill your bottle. Just check that the water is not turbid!

Toilet paper
I always find this an annoying little thing: toilet paper. In the Netherlands we are used to a good sewer system, but in Greece this is different. This is why you should NEVER throw toilet paper in the toilet. Always neatly in the trash.
