I have been visiting Karpathos for 14 years now and I still discover new places every year. So last week I went with Vincent for the first time to the beach Kato Lako. Upon arrival we immediately thought the same thing: the most beautiful beach we have seen so far…!
11/05 Update | Due to the heavy rain a month ago, the road has rather collapsed. You can now no longer take a 4×4 to Kato Lako, only walking !
Until a few years ago, I had never heard of Kato Lako beach. Probably drove by vaguely once, but I never thought about it further. As a 2nd excuse, we always have a normal car and anyone who goes to Kato Lako needs a 4×4 (or quad bike) in addition to a little guts. So last Friday we went to the capital to get a quad bike from Motocarpathos. We also rented a quad here last year and everything is always fine. In high season you do pay a lot more for a quad. We paid 48 euros with full insurance. That’s for one day. While in May it can be 20 euros cheaper. But we’re not complaining, we wanted a quad, it’s something different than a car!
On to Kato Lako!
After breakfast at the harbor at En Plo, we set out for Kato Lako. It took some searching because we didn’t know exactly where it was, but afterwards it’s fine to find. You basically just drive up to Kyra Panagia. Only just before you drive into Kyra Panagia is there a sign “Lux View Villas” (and vaguely written on the asphalt is Kato Lako). This is where you turn right. You then pass in front of the villas , straight on for a bit and then turn left. The road will follow itself here.
At one point there is a sign that says ‘Only 4×4 – walking 20 minutes’ and from that point on I got a little choked up haha! The first part is quite tough, especially if you are not used to anything. It is very steep and loose rocks all over the place. In the end it wasn’t too bad, but I must say the way back was a bit more challenging. Going up is more difficult and you have to really accelerate if you want to go up and then you have to be careful to stay stable. Ah well, although the road was a bit of a struggle, Kato Lako is more than worth it.
Kato Lako is – because of the road to it I guess – very quiet. You could say there are 5 beaches and per beach there were maybe 2 to 4 people sitting there! I can keep saying it, it’s beautiful, see for yourself:
