Diakoftis beach | Beautiful secluded beach behind the airport

What a beautiful secluded beach Diakoftis is, which lies exactly behind the airport! Actually, it is not one beach but you even have two. More on this later in this blog. It used to be a somewhat unknown beach, but in recent years the Italians have discovered it.

Diakoftis Beach Karpathos

Location of Diakoftis beach?

The two beaches of Diakoftis are behind the airport, see below for their coordinates. The airport is located at the south-western point of Karpathos. To get there you have to drive quite a long distance on a dirt road. We prefer to do this by car or quad. With the scooter it is possible but you have to be careful for the stones.

Route to Diakoftis

Seen from the airport, first turn left into the road to Arkassa and then immediately left again at the T-junction. Now you drive around the airport. When the paved road turns right from the airport you go right on the unpaved road (there is also a sign with Diakoftis). You drive all the way to the T-junction. Here you go to the left and you will probably see some cars parked there.

Parks at Diakoftis

You can park your car, quad or scooter here. It can be a bit busier in the high season. Then you’ll have to park further back. Tip is to go early 😉 .

Two beaches of Diakoftis

First beach next to car park

The first beach is right by the car park. It is the most popular of the two because it is a dream beach. It is a sandy beach, most of which is shallow, which allows the water to warm up nicely. The water is so beautifully clear here. You are really at the end of the island!

Diakoftis beach

Second beach slightly to the rear

For the second beach you have to walk a bit. This beach is much larger and often quieter. The water gets deeper faster, making it a little cooler than the first beach. Our tip is to visit both beaches.

Facts about Diakoftis

Here we are going to share with you some fun facts about Diakoftis. When it is wise to go to Diakoftis and what you should definitely do!

Don’t go if it is windy

Diakoftis is really a sandy beach and around the airport it can sometimes blow hard. That is why it is also a good windsurf spot 😉 . It is not wise to go to Diakoftis when it is windy. Then you literally get sandblasted! With strong wind you better go to the beaches on the east side of Karpathos. Think of Amoopi, Ahata, Kyra and Apella.

Plane spotting

Especially on the second beach of Diakoftis the planes come right over the sea! Mainly in the high season there are ”many” and large planes flying. But what is a lot on an island like Karpathos? We have also seen helicopters landing from the military. On the plane there is also a military base. Because of this you see regularly military jeeps driving by.

Photoshoot

Don’t forget to bring your camera! Both beaches are very photogenic, especially the first one which is also very shallow. We regularly see people having a whole photo shoot. The middle section between the two beaches is also very photogenic. It is a rocky area surrounded by the beautiful clear blue water.

Taverna instead of canteen

In the past, there was always a canteen between the two beaches. Here you could get a nice cold beer, but they also had some hot meals. Since a few years ago, they had to leave and a tarverna was built. Personally, we find this a pity, because the canteen had something and added to Diakoftis. The new taverna is modern and sometimes loud music is played.

Snorkeling

Diakoftis is one of the best snorkeling spots on Karpathos. Both beaches are very different to snorkel. The first beach is shallow for a long time, so you can snorkel quite a bit. On the second beach, it gets deeper faster and you see big plateaus at depth. The beauty of Greece is and remains the clear water. You can see everything perfectly in depth!
