Karpathos is known as a perfect destination for hiking and nothing could be further from the truth! Especially in the months of April, May and October it is nice for hiking. The temperature is more pleasant then and it is nice and quiet on the island.
On Karpathos, Art&Walk offers various hikes. We too joined them for the first time this year. Renate and Thom’s walks are a great way to get to know Karpathos better. You see the island very differently than when you drive around by car.
About Art&Walk Karpathos
After 10 years of Karpathos, Reiny decided to say goodbye to her company Art&Walk. Fortunately the company was not lost and was taken over this year by Renate & Thom. They will continue the company and make it even more beautiful!
Art&Walk once started as a club for kids to do crafts, now it is much more than that! Currently, they offer 9 different hikes. From hikes through the villages, and the valley of Pigadia to the mountains. The levels vary for each walk, so there is something for everyone.
Besides the walks, you can also get involved with art. They have workshops with paint and mosaics in their beautiful garden. They also do day tours to the neighbouring island of Kassos. Renate and Thom will of course go with you and tell you everything about this neighboring island of Karpathos.
Hiking on Karpathos: The Valley walk van Art&Walk
It was for us the most sporty vacation ever! We went climbing, mountain biking and climbed the Kali Limni. So time for a relaxing walk through one of the valleys of Karpathos with Art&walk. This walk is about 7km, but is easy to do because it is nice and flat.
Normally, the walk is in English. Today, however, the whole group was Dutch and Renate was able to chat in Dutch.
We started the walk at Auto Tour on the busy main road in Pigadia. After less than 5 minutes of walking, the noise of Pigadia is already inaudible. Renate briefly told us about the walk before we started.
It’s nice that everyone can walk at his or her pace and take pictures. The group waits naturally and we periodically stop for a bit of storytelling from Renate. The olive trees and the letter carrier’s bus are among the things we see. We also walk past Karpathos’ new water reservoir.
The village of Menetes and raki
After a beautiful part through the valley, we arrive at a chapel that officially belongs to the village of Menetes. Renate tells us where the name of the village Menetes comes from. We can also enter the chapel to light incense. Outside on the square of the chapel it is time for a break. We drink fresh tea with herbs from the valley of Karpathos.
After a cup of tea, it is time to walk back in the direction of Pigadia. We walk a bit through the, dry riverbed and then we stop at a beautiful, large olive tree. Can you climb a bit? Then you can go up to see a cave and an ancient tomb. From here you also have a nice view of Pigadia and the sea.
Downstairs, Renate explains the difference between raki and ouzo. Of course, a shot of raki cannot be missed! We continue to Renate & Thom’s house to sit in their garden. Here are also the mosaic workshops held. Thom is already waiting for us and together we drink a cup of coffee and chat for a while.
