The village of Arkassa possesses a beautiful beach called Agios Nikolaos Beach. It is a large beach consisting of sand! A lovely beach without pebbles or stones. In this blog, we will take you through what the beautiful beach has to offer.
Where is Agios Nikolaos Beach located?
Obviously, Agios Nikolaos aka Arkassa beach is located in Arkassa. Coming into the village of Arkassa from Pigadia/airport, turn left at the first crossroads and right at a T-junction. If you drive out of this you will come out to the beach. You can easily park your car or scooter there. In clear weather, you can see Kasos from this beach!
Facts about Arkassa beach
Big waves
The first part of Agios Nikolaos Beach is shallow, creating some waves very quickly. In strong winds, the chance of waves is already a lot higher, but if you have the chance to go the day after the full moon, the chance of high waves is highest! We head to the beach just right to jump in the waves! If you have a skimboard, you should definitely bring it. Just be careful not to go too much to the side due to the current, here are all rocks you don’t want to bump into 😉
Beach volleyball court
During the main season, a group of fanatics gather in the afternoon to play competitive beach volleyball against each other. It used to be 2 pillars that were re-buried every year. Manolis the owner of the Stema Bar arranged this every year. Since a couple of years, two professional poles have been installed and remain in place even in winter. So you see how seriously these competitions are taken 😉
Crabs
Especially in the pre-season in April/May when there are still few tourists, there are all these little crabs. You can see the little holes as you walk along the beach. When we are on the beach around this period, it’s always enjoyable to see them crawling by again. No need to be afraid, very small chance that they bite with their claws. The crabs are more likely to be scared of you 😉
Party on Sundays
The KarPassion Beach Bar regularly plays some nice music in the afternoon. They often have a DJ spinning music from 4pm on Sunday afternoons. That’s when the extra party is where a lot of younger people (including many locals) come during the summer months. What could not be nicer to end the weekend with a nice drink at the beach with some louder music playing in the background.
Sunset
The setting sun is really beautiful in Arkassa. You can see it completely disappear into the sea.Tip to take a drink and a bite to eat and enjoy it on the beach for a while. From KarPassion Beach Bar, you also have perfect views of the setting sun. But if you are still in Arkassa for the setting sun, the very best spot is at the Stema Bar.
Archaeological sites
In Arkassa, all kinds of archaeological finds have been found which you can see at Chapel of Agia Sophia which is close to the beach. The easiest is to drive there by car/scooter but of course, you can also walk here. This summer, Athina’s father found a marble pillar at Agios Nikolaos beach. The archaeologist was very happy with it!
