I have been visiting Karpathos for 14 years now and still every year I discover new places. Last week I went to Kato Lako beach with Vincent for the first time. When we arrived, we immediately thought the same thing: the most beautiful beach we have seen so far…!
Until a few years ago, I had never heard of Kato Lako beach. I probably drove past it vaguely once, but I never gave it a second thought. As a second excuse, we always have a normal car and whoever goes to Kato Lako needs, apart from a bit of guts, a 4×4 (or quad). So last Friday we went to the capital to get a quad at Motocarpathos. We have rented a quad here last year and everything is always fine. In the high season, you pay a lot more for a quad. We paid 48 euro with full insurance. That is for one day. While in May it can be 20 euros cheaper. But we are not complaining, we wanted a quad, that is also something else than a car!
Let’s go to Kato Lako!
After breakfast at the harbour near En Plo
we drove to Kato Lako. It was a bit of a search, as we did not know exactly where it was, but afterwards it is easy to find. You actually just drive to Kyra Panagia. Only just before you enter Kyra Panagia there is a sign ‘Lux View Villas’ (and on the tarmac it says vaguely Kato Lako). Here you go to the right. You then pass in front of the villas, straight on for a bit and then turn left. The road follows automatically.
At one point, there is a sign saying ‘Only 4×4 – walking 20 minutes’ and from that point on, I felt a little bit anxious, haha! The first part is quite tough, especially if you are not used to anything. It is very steep and there are loose stones all over the place. In the end it was not too bad, but I have to say that the way back was a bit harder. Going up is more difficult and you really have to accelerate a lot to get up and then you have to be careful to stay stable. Ah well, although the way was a bit of a shock, Kato Lako is more than worth it.
11/05 Update | Because of the heavy rain a month ago, the road has collapsed. You can’t take a 4×4 to Kato Lako now, only by foot.
Kato Lako is – I guess because of the road – very quiet. You could say that there are 5 beaches and per beach there were maybe 2 to 4 people! I can keep saying it, it is beautiful, see for yourself:
