Karpathos Town the capital of Karpathos

The capital of the Greek island Karpathos is Karpathos Town, but is also often called Pigadia. You can read everything about this place in this blog!

Where is the capital of Karpathos?

The capital of Karpathos is located on the east side of the island. From the airport it is about 20 minutes by car. Although the capital is called ‘Karpathos city’ you can’t really call it a city. It is more like a big (chaotic!) village.

The town is the heart of Karpathos. It is the most touristic place of the island. You will find many hotels and restaurants here and also various tours are organised from Karpathos town.

It is good to know that Karpathos town consists of many steep slopes. Karpathos is therefore not really a wheelchair proof island. The boulevard at the harbour is reasonably flat. The harbour and the boulevard are especially pleasant in the evening. At the harbour are several restaurants that have a nice view on the sea.

The beach of Karpathos Town

Karpathos has many beautiful beaches. Apella, for example, was once declared one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe and Diakoftis also has a real caribbean vibe. However, the beach of Karpathos town is not a beauty.

It is a long sandy beach on the left side of the town and we always compare it a bit with a Dutch beach. If you really don’t want to leave Pigadia, it is of course a great beach for swimming and sunbathing, but for the real beautiful beaches you shouldn’t stay in Karpathos town.

When the boat comes in from Athens

We find the harbour of Karpathos very cosy. Especially when the boat comes in from Athens, we really enjoy sitting on a terrace at the harbour. It is always a chaotic mess when the boat arrives. Cars are driving, people are walking off the boat with their trolleys and all the lorries are going up and down. All sorts of things happen at that moment. Maybe a nice Dutch habit.. to watch people from a terrace, but really a must! 😉

Our favourite restaurants in the city

The capital of Karpathos has many nice restaurants. There is a choice for everyone! We like to share our favourites with you. We don’t visit the city every day, but when we go out for dinner or breakfast, these are our favourite spots…

En Plo

This is our favourite place for everything, haha! We like to have breakfast here, but also cocktails, dinner and football. And Plo has a beautiful location at the harbour, great staff, good food and a nice vibe. The Greeks love coming here too!

Mesogios

We also like to eat at Mesogios when we are in Pigadia. The reason why we went there years ago for the first time was because Minas doesn’t ‘lure’ you in front of his tent. That is sometimes a disadvantage in the touristy town of Karpathos. But here it did not happen and we liked that very much!

In addition, Mesogios has fresh dishes on the menu every day. He shares this every day around 3 – 4 o’clock via his Facebook Page.

Tours from Karpathos Town

From the capital of Karpathos several tours start to discover the island! We explain them below!

Walks and creative workshops

If you like walking or doing something creative, Art&Walk is the place to be! Renate and Thom have their own company where they offer various walks from Pigadia to discover the island. They also give mosaic and painting workshops.

Mountainbiken

Ion Club offers mountain bike tours from the capital. If you prefer windsurfing, the village of Afiartis is the place to be! This is where Ion is based with their windsurfing club. Did you know that Karpathos is one of the world’s best hotspots when it comes to windsurfing?

Boat trips from Karpathos Town

From the harbour of Karpathos you can do several boat trips. Several boats depart daily to Kassos and Saria, but also to the beaches Kyra Panagia, Ahata and Apella. Most boat trips start around 10.00 o’clock and you arrive back in the harbour of Pigadia around 17.00 o’clock.

Want to book a boat trip? Go to the harbour early in the morning and get on one of the boats to ask when there is room for you (usually you can go the same day). You can also ask the night before – when the boats are back in port – if you can join them the next day.

Read our blog about the boat trip to Apella and Kyra Panagia here.
